Whether you are newly engaged, thinking about getting engaged or already married, it’s important to take time away from the humdrum routine of life (work, sleep, repeat…) to reconnect as a couple. I used to know a couple who went out the movies every single Motzei Shabbat. I applaud their initiative, but I have often wondered if they saw a lot of bad movies, and more importantly, if this evening didn’t just become part of their routine and lose its spark.
Date night shouldn’t be an obligation; it should be fun and exciting. Think escape room, rock climbing or a magic show. Or how about a balloon ride, sunset picnic or bowling game? The key is to find activities you like to do together, or both want to try, and shake it up so you’re not doing the same thing every week.
Here’s an even better idea: Date night can be a chance to improve communication skills and impact your relationship every day. That’s one of the reasons that I developed my couple workshops. In a relaxed atmosphere, you can learn active listening and problem-solving skills (who doesn’t need those sometimes?). And you’ll learn the communication secrets for a happy marriage!
I call my latest workshop “Make a Date to Invest in Your Relationship.” It’s taking place on September 7, 2017, at 7:30 PM at the OU Israel Center. It’s an interactive workshop that’s not touchy-feely, but rather practical and results-oriented. We’ll be serving wine and cheese, for an informal and cheerful vibe.
When you go home, you will have stronger communication skills, a deeper understanding of yourself and your partner, and the tools for a healthier and happier relationship!
